The SJBC Library is open between 8.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday and is staffed by a Librarian and Cover Supervisor.
Students may borrow two reading books for up to two weeks. The loan period can be extended by a further week at a time on request to the Librarian. Lost, damaged or unreturned books may incur a penalty charge to cover replacement of the title and an administrative fee.
The Library is equipped with computers to help students with homework, coursework or to take Accelerated Reader book quizzes. The Librarian is on hand to help students with access to their educational computer resources, can help with passwords, printing and stationery for homework and classwork.
The Library is also used as a quiet study area for 6th formers and an additional teaching space for 1:1 or small group tuition. It also acts as a hub for Literacy lessons, reading competitions and other literary activities throughout the school, such as the twice-weekly, after-school Reading Club.
All Year 7 and Year 8 students at SJBC are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader for Students programme, which monitors and manages independent reading practice while promoting reading for pleasure. A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills.
A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. We take care to ensure that most of the books stocked on our shelves have associated reading quizzes.
We recommend that students complete a quiz within 48 hours of finishing the book and we would ideally like students to read at least 12 books across the school year to ensure they maintain and develop their reading skills.
