French

Curriculum vision:

The French curriculum is designed to spark enthusiasm for language learning through engaging and culturally rich topics. Students build foundational vocabulary and grammar across key themes such as personal information, school life, free time, and local area, while developing core skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A strong emphasis is placed on expressing and justifying opinions, describing people and places, and using the present tense confidently. Regular assessments and revision periods support progress, and a cultural research project encourages global awareness and independent learning.

How is French taught at SJBC?

French at St John Bosco College is taught in a way that fully reflects the school’s Catholic ethos of Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour. The curriculum promotes academic excellence through a structured, high-quality program focused on mastering vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation across all four language skills (namely: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking). Lessons encourage respect and global citizenship by immersing students in the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, fostering empathy and curiosity. Through collaborative speaking tasks, role-plays, and cultural projects, students build a strong sense of community, developing communication skills and supporting one another in learning. Independent tasks and cultural research projects nurture resilience and integrity, aligning with the school's mission to help every child grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

What homework will students do in French?

Students will complete paper-based homework tasks designed to consolidate class learning and build core language skills. These may include vocabulary practice using look-cover-write-check, grammar exercises, translation tasks, reading comprehensions, and sentence-writing activities. Homework will also support revision for assessments and encourage independent use of key structures and vocabulary covered in lessons.

How are wider skills – e.g. literacy, oracy, numeracy and independent research – delivered through French?

Wider skills are embedded throughout the French curriculum to support students' overall development. Literacy is strengthened through reading comprehension, accurate spelling, and structured writing in Spanish. Oracy is developed through regular speaking activities, pronunciation practice, and role-plays that build confidence and fluency. Numeracy is incorporated through topics such as dates, time, prices, and simple data handling in context. Independent research is fostered through cultural projects, where students explore French -speaking countries, festivals, or traditions, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to gather and present information effectively.
