Business Studies

Curriculum vision:

At SJBC, our Business curriculum develops creative, curious, and strategic learners who understand how businesses operate in a dynamic environment. Using real-life scenarios, it examines internal and external factors affecting decision-making and considers the impact on stakeholders.  Business fosters ambition and shows how positive change can happen through ethical trading, sustainability and corporate responsibility. This empowers students to make informed career choices - as employees, entrepreneurs or future leaders.

How is Business taught at SJBC?

Students are introduced to key concepts before applying their knowledge through real case studies. In groups, they research businesses, from start-ups to global leaders.   They analyse financial and non-financial impacts on stakeholders, considering decisions influenced by internal and external factors. Students evaluate business options and may use role-play to represent stakeholder views or present recommendations as consultants.

What homework will students do in Business?

Key vocabulary and concepts are introduced through pre reading, with knowledge applied via case studies, independent research, and project-based learning. Learning is reinforced through exam-style questions and key concept tasks. In Key Stage 4, students use Seneca and media sources for project-based homework, preparing them for the independent Cambridge Technical coursework at Key Stage 5, where they’re expected to take full ownership of their learning.

How are wider skills – e.g. literacy, oracy, numeracy and independent research – delivered through Business?

Students present work through business reports, presentations, spreadsheets, questionnaires, digital marketing tools and role play. Financial literacy is built through calculations, in-tray exercises and analysis of financial statements and graphs.
