SEN 'MAKE A BOOK'

SJBC SEN students paid a visit to The British Library to take part in their 'Make A Book' workshop.

The inspiring and practical workshop showed students how to develop a basic understanding of different book forms as well as making and taking away their very own, self-designed and bound book.

During the session, students were introduced to the history of the book and in the Treasures gallery and public spaces they encountered illuminated manuscripts, Eastern printed books, scrolls and much more - including rare stamps and a display on the Magna Carta.

The students were then able to create their own book using basic bookbinding techniques. They decorated the cover using a range of art materials, taking inspiration from their findings in the Treasures Gallery.

The workshop provided a new and unique experience for our students with special educational needs and allowed both participants and support staff to engage with historical collections in a creative way. Many thanks must go to Rebecca from The British Library for a perfectly designed workshop, and to Miss Sabolova and Ms Piznal for their support with the students.
