Year 9 into Year 10

When you are in year 9 you need to think carefully about what you will be studying in the future and then make choose the right GCSE course for you.

Our curriculum in Year 10 provides a broad and balanced programme of study and builds upon your prior learning in Years 7, 8 and 9. It will also provide you with a solid platform for further study, post-16, in our sixth form or at college.

You will study the ‘core subjects’ of English Language, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, and, naturally in a Catholic School, Religious Education. In the core subject blocks you will also have the opportunity to study English Literature and Statistics.

You will then have the choice of three optional subjects. You should choose three subjects from the following list, at least one of which is from the subjects highlighted in bold:

Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish); History, Geography, Leisure and Tourism, Food Technology, Product Design, Art, Music, Business Studies, Triple Science.

The combination of courses that you opt for will depend on a number of different factors. These include the suitability of the course, your career aspirations and interest in an area of study as well as past performance in a subject. It is very important that you discuss all these factors with your parents and teachers before the final choices are made.

The vast majority of students will take GCSE qualifications in the subjects that they choose. A small number of students may be directed to take a GCSE equivalent qualification, in those subjects, where appropriate.
