SJBC sixth form is a Roman Catholic school with a diverse, vibrant and cohesive community which was noted as a key feature in our last Ofsted inspection. Our sixth form provides a rounded and fulfilling experience. Academic study is integral to life at SJBC, however our students’ time with us is also enhanced beyond the classroom through our enrichment and graduation programmes, as well as our extracurricular offer.
Our Salesian values of RUAH; Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour underpin all that we do at SJBC sixth form. RUAH informs our mission statement which was written in collaboration with our students and provides the tone and structure for our approach to managing student well-being and behaviour, with a focus on strong relationships that enable each child to “know that they are loved” in our school.
Sixth form students have all the advantages of being part of the wider school. They receive the same level of personal and pastoral support, have access to all our state-of-the-art facilities and an get involved in various mentoring opportunities.
Sixth formers also benefit from an exclusive café style area with a hot drinks machine and a supervised study area, which supports a culture of independent learning bridging the gap between school and beyond, whether that is university, apprenticeships or the World of Work.
Empowering our students is key to supporting our believe and achieve vision, which resonates throughout our sixth form. Students complete work experience, which they seek out and arrange with the support of our independent careers’ advisor. This serves to build their confidence, team building and leadership skills, as well as fine-tuning their communication skills and reinforcing that successful professions await them.
We are dedicated to actively promoting the Catholic life of the school. The school benefits from an on-site chapel and a Salesian priest chaplain who leads the liturgical and prayer life of the school and provides a popular and supportive presence for all staff and pupils throughout the school.
We ensure that student wellbeing is a priority and British Values are taught to ensure that our students develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. We prepare our students for life in contemporary Britain by developing an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect. Our school promotes understanding of difference and celebration of diversity not just tolerance.
Indeed, by the end of sixth form our students will have gained several irreplaceable experiences and knowledge, which will prepare them for life in the wider world. All of which is done on a foundation of ‘reason, religion and kindness’, based on the Catholic teachings of Saint John Bosco.
At SJBC sixth form we believe that qualities such as perseverance, resilience and courage are key to success. We want our students to face challenges with a growth mindset and to recognise that nothing is out of their reach in life. Over 93% of our 2018 leavers successfully continued into Higher Education, studying an array of subjects including; Economics, Biomedical Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Accounting and Finance, Adult Nursing and Geology.
