PSHE

PSHE

We are dedicated to consistently promoting PSHE throughout all aspects of school life and key stages at Saint John Bosco College. Through our dynamically planned and constantly evolving PSHE curriculum we cover key topics of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. With this our young people develop into insightful, tolerant and fair individuals who are respected and respectful to all.

Citizenship is incorporated into our PSHE program. We aim ‘to deepen pupils’ understanding of democracy, government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens’. We give our young people regular opportunities, both through the curriculum and the wider life of the school, to reflect on and demonstrate the values that underpin British society and life. We host a number of carefully selected external visitors and activities that we feel will develop students' understanding of the importance of volunteering, tolerance, equal opportunities, respect for others and respect for our environment.

British Values are also a key aspect in our PSHE program at SJBC. The five British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

British Values in Practice at SJBC

SJBC uses strategies within the National curriculum and beyond to secure such outcomes for students. These values can be observed in many aspects of our daily school life, both through the formal curriculum and wider school life including:

  • Tutor Time and Assemblies
  • Religious Education Lessons
  • Drop Down Days and Week
  • Student Leadership and Student Voice
  • Visits, Visitors and International Links
  • Charitable Activities and Community Service

Through these avenues we nurture our positive school ethos and underpin the importance of Spiritual, Moral and Cultural aspects of the curriculum. Further to this, PSHE is also supported by our school ethos of RUAHRespect, Understanding, Affection and Humour and these four principles underpin every aspect of our school life and together spell out the Hebrew word for 'breath of life' or 'spirit'.

We actively monitor our PSHE program and gain regular feedback from our young people. Their voice is important and plays a pivotal role in allowing us to continuously improve and develop PSHE at Saint John Bosco.
