According to Katja Hall, CBI Deputy Director-General…

“With the EU still our largest export market, it’s no surprise to see German, French and Spanish language skills so highly prized by companies.” She also stated that nearly half of businesses surveyed in a recent CBI/Person survey on language skills employability acknowledged a need for language skills. Furthermore, 77 % of British exporters believe they lose business because they can’t speak other languages and more than 30% of UK businesses want people specifically for their language skills.” However, learning languages is not just about helping you get the best job, they are also fun, make you more creative and after learning one, it’s 1000 x easier to learn another. They are also of course, incredibly useful for travelling and make you smarter.

Other benefits of learning a language are mentioned by Alex Rawlings, who speaks lots of languages fluently, in the following video…

Languages at SJBC

Students at SJBC have the opportunity to learn either Spanish or French in Year 7 and study their chosen language to GCSE level and we also offer MFL at A-Level. We were recently awarded foundation level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom. SJBC’s international work includes strong links with partner Salesian schools across Europe. In addition we recently took part in an international business project with schools from Italy, Malta, Spain under the European Union Erasmus+ programme.

Here are some of the ways we encourage students with their language learning:

  1. We use Bili a safe teacher controlled online student exchange which brings language learning to life. https://www.bili.uk.com/public/
  2. Students have ample opportunity to improve their cultural knowledge of Spanish and French speaking countries through film.
  3. New friends…we have annual visits from Spanish and Italian students and we organise trips and workshops with the students.
  4. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their own language learning. Alex Rawlings has the following tips for you… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l57XikZUURU
  5. We have lots of bilingual students in our school and students who you can practice your language skills with.
  6. We are a very multicultural school and we therefore consider learning languages to play an important part in promoting and celebrating different cultures
  7. Students have a vocabulary test once a week to keep them building up their vocabulary. Vocabulary learning is such fun nowadays due to the wide range of excellent online language learning  resources…Quizlet, Duolingo, Memrise, FluentU, Espanol Extra, Francais Extra, Linguascope….
  8. Students are rewarded for using target language.
