EAL

English as an Additional Language

As a diverse and inclusive school we welcome students from all over the world into our community. Speaking more than one language is a fantastic attribute that helps young people develop both socially and academically across all areas of life and that’s why as a school we support students who are lucky enough to have this experience.

We provide a range of support for students who are new to English or whose English language skills are still developing. Some of the things we do include group classes, 1-1 literacy support, reading buddies, a phonics based reading programme, student buddies who speak the same language and mentoring support to help you settle and build your confidence as a learner. Our teachers in all subject areas have a broad range of experience in working with learners for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL)

Additionally, we offer the opportunity for students to sit GCSE and A Level examinations in their home language thereby giving them an additional qualification and recognition of their skills for the future.

Support for students for whom English is a second language is coordinated through the St Francis department. Please email Mr M Gordziejewski (EAL Coordinator) for further advice or support: mgordziejewski@sjbc.wandsworth.sch.uk
